Anesthesia for liver, kidney and kidney pancreas (KP) transplantation

AT 040.jpgAnesthesia care for liver, kidney and kidney pancreas transplantation is among the most complex in the specialty. As such, it is provided by a small group of very specialized anesthesiologists who work with surgeons and patients to ensure the highest quality care.

The liver transplant anesthesia group is at the ready to support transplantation surgeries when donor livers become available. For the best patient outcomes, donor livers must be transplanted within 10 hours of becoming available. Procedures may be necessary at any time of day, can be prolonged and require complex anesthetic management.

There are close to 100 kidney transplants performed each year at the QEII Health Sciences Centre. All staff anesthesiologists provide the expert anesthetic management required by patients who receive kidney transplants.

The same is true for kidney pancreas transplants. Though there are significantly fewer of these procedures performed, anesthesia department members must be available on an emergency basis as donor organs become available. For the best patient outcomes, the donor pancreas must be transplanted within 10 hours of becoming available.
