Thoracic Anesthesia

AN 060.jpgThoracic surgeries, such as those needed for treatment of conditions affecting the lungs, chest wall and diaphragm, require general anesthesia and, at times, one-lung ventilation.  Anesthesia care for thoracic surgeries at the QEII Health Sciences Centre (more than 350 annually) is provided by a specialized group of anesthesiologists.

Thoracic surgery is often associated with significant post-operative pain. The thoracic anesthesia group is currently implementing a new anesthesia practice as an alternative to routine use of epidural analgesia to better manage pain following surgery.
