Neuroanesthesia

AN 071.jpgFew procedures are as complex as those that fall into the neurosurgical category. A group of 11 highly-specialized anesthesiologists provides anesthesia care for patients needing these surgeries and other related procedures at the QEII Health Sciences Centre.

The most common health problems requiring neurosurgery and anesthetic management are: intracranial tumours, aneurysms, head trauma and spinal anomalies. On average, the neuroanesthesia team provides anesthesia services for twenty neurosurgeries each week.

Most people receive general anesthesia when undergoing neurosurgery. There is, however, an increasing need for patients to remain awake during some surgeries. These patients receive alternate forms of anesthesia.
