Message From the Chair
The Department of Anesthesia’s first responsibility is to provide exceptional anesthesia care to people of all ages at the QEII Health Sciences Centre, the IWK Health Centre, the Saint John Regional Hospital, the Dartmouth General Hospital and the Hants Community Hospital.
In addition to providing excellent clinical care, our 150+ department members teach the latest techniques and skills to anesthesia residents and medical students, conduct medical research in many areas of anesthesia, and impact the lives of people in developing countries through their global health efforts. Department members also supervise and mentor clinical and research fellows, helping to ensure continued patient care and research excellence here and around the world.
We set ourselves apart from other academic departments of anesthesia by challenging ourselves to move forward, strategically, with forethought and with subtle determination, by fostering a collaborative environment and by freely lending our expertise to our partners, working with them to meet the challenges of heatlhcare demand or to create the medical curriculum of the future.
The Dalhousie Department of Anesthesia is recognized nationally as a centre of clinical excellence in anesthesia care and is among the highest ranked accredited residency training programs in Canada based on CaRMS match statistics. Our members are leaders in their field, in the hospitals and health centres where they work, within Dalhousie and in their communities. They apply their professional breadth and depth well beyond the practice of anesthesia, further enhancing the strength our department.
