Each Wednesday residents are released from clinical duties for academic purposes, including seminars, self-directed research or quality assurance activities. A series of workshops and tutorials are given by the department under the headings of ethics, management, teaching, and communications. Residents are also expected to participate in such events as grand rounds and journal clubs.
Residents participate in academic sessions delivered through Dalhousie’s Postgraduate Medical Education Office. These sessions generally focus on the CanMEDS framework.
Simulator sessions are also included in anesthesia teaching sessions delivered through the Atlantic Health Training and Simulation Centre. These sessions provide residents with a range of learning opportunities such as failed airway, advanced airway technique and fibre optic.
